Diego Sanchez Picture of the Day

FOLLOW-UP To The Unseen 'Tanner Chronicles'

As previously discussed here, Evan Tanner is blogging his cross-country trip for Inside Fighting. What he has reported has been uneventful so far. His journal entries are sad, actually, as they reveal a lonely, tortured, uneducated man who is apparently without friends and money.

Happily, there is another side to his journey. What we've discovered here at LukeBeston.net is that Tanner's sojourn has left a few noteworthy matters in its wake and some of our readers have been there to witness them. We have literally been overwhelmed with emails from readers who have spotted the fallen champ at various sites around the country. The readers present a more full picture of what Tanner's been up to.

We're going to feature some of these emails in the exact words of the writers who sent them.

What follows is one that came in this morning.

"Dear Sirs:

I read the other email about Evan Tanner that yall put up and had to let you know that I seen him today. It was about 5 am this morning and he was sitting out on Main st. with a fucking sign saying he was collecting for the hurricane victims "of the USA" and asking people in cars at the red light for donations. What he was doing was fucking begging. The sign was torn up cardboard and some of the words were spelled all wrong. I actually heard him telling a lady next to me at the stoplight that he worked for the "New Orleans Charity of America" and that he was going to take the money there himself. His hair was matted and he was staggering around and cussing when people would give him nothing. I pulled up and asked him if he was ready for his fight with the crow and he threw an elbow at my lexus and knocked the badge off. Hes a fucking looser and I will never cheer for him again."

Boxing prediction

Look for Vargas and Juarez to win convincingly tonight. Both their opponents are respectable, but not too dangerous. These fights are serving to promote future title shots for Vargas and Juarez.

Well, bitches, before I get ready to piss away $34.95 for the UFC amateur hour tonight, I thought a recap was due considering how much has happened in the past week.

Brian Cimins (left) triumphed over Herr Kirik Jenness (right, pictured with NAGA partner Kip Kollar), head of the MMA.tv empire, after a two year legal battle during which Jenness and his minions tried to muscle Cimins and his Grapplers Quest promotion out of the American grappling scene much as they've tried to do with every rival message board since 1999. The judge, stating what fans knew all along, ruled that MMA.tv "was inconsiderate and unfair in taxing unnecessary costs to the defendant" and dismissed the case with prejudice.

Not so lucky was Rafiel Torre (born Ralph Bartel), who was finally convicted of the December 22, 2001 murder of Brian Richards. Though unmasked years ago by trolls as a fraud who had falsely claimed to be a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it took nearly four years to bring Torre to justice. Sensing defeat, Torre decided to take Richards' widow Angelina down with him, finally implicating his former lover in the murder.

Finally, David "Fatbody" Horner (above, left), has once again left Fightsport, this time amid a series of challenges from MrZiplokk and Leigh Remedios. demoness (above, right), on the other hand, refuses to disappear as requested.

Rafiel Torre convicted of murder!

Man convicted of murdering friend for insurance money

By Rod Leveque, Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - A former cage fighter was convicted of murder Thursday for strangling his friend so he could live with the man's widow and her $1 million life insurance payout.

After two days of heated debate, jurors convicted Rafiel Torre of the first-degree murder of Bryan Richards and found he committed the murder for financial gain. The charges practically guarantee Torre a sentence of life in prison with no chance for parole.

Richards' family gasped, burst into tears and dove into each others' arms at the announcement of the verdict Thursday afternoon in West Valley Superior Court.

They waited four years for this day and said afterward they sometimes questioned whether justice would ever come.

"Bryan never did anything to deserve this,' his brother Keith said. "It was just senseless. It didn't have to happen.'

Richards, 32, was found strangled in the bed of his pickup truck outside a Rancho Cucamonga supermarket on Dec. 22, 2001.

The Rancho Cucamonga father was killed several months after his wife and Torre met at a nightclub and started a torrid love affair.

Torre, 40, fought professionally before his arrest and was known in the martial arts community for his work as a journalist in the bloody sport of cage fighting.

Prosecutors claimed he used an inescapable jujitsu chokehold called the "mata leon,' or "lion killer,' to strangle Richards so he could have Richards' wife to himself. The two would then live luxuriously off the life insurance money.

Torre, dressed in a gray suit, stood and swept his hand across his chest in the sign of the cross on Thursday seconds before his jury was led into court.

He bowed his head and closed his eyes as the court clerk read the guilty verdict.
His head hung low as he heard his fate.

Torre testified during his trial he had nothing to do with the murder.

Rather, he blamed it on Richards' widow, saying the woman hired a hit man and asked him to come forward and claim he killed Richards in self-defense if police ever tried to arrest her.
Prosecutors, however, ripped holes through that story and exposed Torre as a lifetime liar.
They also described for jurors the love affair between Torre and the woman, showed jurors Torre had the martial arts skill to apply the fatal chokehold and called as witnesses two other professional fighters who claim Torre solicited them to kill Richards months before the man turned up dead.

Members of the 11-woman, 1-man jury said Thursday they struggled to reach a verdict during their two days of deliberations.

Two jurors initially refused to convict Torre because they were concerned the case against him was almost entirely circumstantial.

The divide sparked bitter, angry arguments, they said.

"It was blood, sweat and tears,' juror Melinda Kirk said. "It was very stressful.'
Major crimes prosecutor Kent Williams said Thursday his evidence against Torre was among the most solid he's ever had in a case.

He nonetheless said he understood why the jury struggled.
"I don't think that normal, healthy people are wired to understand this kind of reprehensible conduct,' Williams said.

Torre's attorney, Anthony Robusto, said after the verdict that he believed Torre got a fair trial.
Members of Richards' family suspect that Richards' widow also might have had a hand in the murder.

They said they hope Torre, now convicted, would tell the truth about her role. If he did so, several of Richards' relatives said, they would speak on his behalf at sentencing.
Williams said detectives continue to investigate other suspects in the case.

Judge Barry Plotkin is set to sentence Torre on Sept. 29.

Kirik Jenness defeated by Brian Cimins in court of law

On April 25th, 2003, MMA, LLC (Kirik Jenness and Gabe Smallman, owners of www.MMA.tv) commenced legal action with the FEDERAL COURTS System in Boston, Massachusetts against The Grapplers Company, Inc. for a supposed "misappropriation of proprietary information."

After two years, this is the result:

THIS CASE HAS BEEN DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE!!!

"MMA, LLC's inexcusable conduct and intentional abuse of the discovery process"

"The behavior of the plaintiff's counsel (MMA) was inconsiderate and unfair in taxing unnecessary costs to the defendant. It is all the more inexplicable in that it was the plaintiff (MMA) who chose to bring suit against Mr. Cimins and his firm. While the court is accustomed to delaying tactics on the part of the defendant striving to avoid their day in court, plaintiffs, for the most part are eager to hasten the vindication of their claims. From MMA, LLC's (www.MMA.tv) dilatory prosecution of its own case, the court draws the inference that the suit was INSTIGATED AND MAINTAINED PRIMARILY FOR THE REASONS OF HARASSMENT. That, and the plaintiff's failure to comply in good faith with the court's order are sufficient reasons to grant the relief requested."

Skip and Sally Hall Wax Philosophical Re: Vagina

Sally Hall (age: 49), wife of winless MMA fighter Skip Hall (age: 61), recently revealed that she and her husband have discussed the female sexual organs of young women on several occasions. Sally revealed that she and her husband Skip have observed young women out in public and theorized and mused about the "pussies" of the girls.

"Young girls between the ages of 12 and say 20 have what my husband and I have observed to be the "Golden Pussy" years. It starts out totally innocent, they have what they feel must be the only one of it's kind and proudly stick it out for all to see. If you doubt this, take this observation process to the mall, the beach or anywhere else that you find teenage girls. They have this strut or walk that's a dead give away. They dangle (so to speak) this prized possession until some scumbag .... takes them up on their innocent offer."

LukeBeston.net exclusive: The unseen 'Tanner Chronicles'

As MMA fans with suitably empty personal lives know, former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner recently embarked on a cross-country trip in a jeep he reportedly calls his "Fuck Wagon" (source: MMARingreport.com), ostensibly for the purpose of seeking better training partners to further his stalled fighting career. Tanner has been documenting his journey via a series of unremarkable diary entries for failed UFC press release reprinting site InsideFighting.com.

The highlight of Tanner's rambling so far has been a story about not helping a desperate woman in distress by refusing to lend her only ONE dollar - and despite being more than happy to gamble away sixty times that amount on an irresponsible and ill-advised blackjack binge.

To make matters worse, LukeBeston.net recently received the following e-mail, which educated and intellectually honest readers will universally agree sheds an even more disturbing light on Tanner's recent activities.

Fight predictions

Barrett over Rahman. Collazo over Gonzalez. Mayorga over Piccirillo. McCall over Saleta. McCall is an over the hill and Saleta is a never was. Fight will probably be dull as hell. Rahman-Barrett is tough to call and I always have trouble predicting Rahman fights. I like Barrett because he had limited amateur experience and he seems to me to get better every time he fights as a pro. This should be an entertaining bout.

Rafiel Torre tricked into admitting guilt!

During what was, without a doubt, the most heated day of testimony during the long awaited murder trial of Rafiel Torre (born Ralph Bartel), the disgraced MMA journalist cracked under cross examination by Deputy D.A. Kent Williams and inadvertently confessed to killing Brian Richards, admitted that he was a fraud whose greatest achievements were mere fabrications and finally implicated Richards' widow, Angelina Richards, as the mastermind behind the killing.

Trial bombshell: Ex-cage fighter accuses mistress

By Rod Leveque, Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - A former cage fighter betrayed the woman he once loved on Wednesday when he took the witness stand in his murder trial and blamed her for the killing.
Rafiel Torre, deflecting blame away from himself, told jurors that his former mistress, Angelina Richards, hired a hitman to kill her husband, then asked him to help cover it up if she were ever caught.

"She said she had her husband killed," Torre testified Wednesday. "She said if she were ever arrested, I should come forward and claim it was self-defense."

Torre dropped the bombshell allegation for the first time during what was the final day of testimony in his trial in West Valley Superior Court.

He said he never told the story to police or anyone else before because he was in love with Richards, but he had to tell it now because his life is on the line.

Torre is known in the martial arts community as a former fighter and for his work as a journalist covering the burgeoning, bloody sport of professional cage fighting.

The 40-year-old man is on trial for the murder of Bryan Richards, a 32-year-old Rancho Cucamonga father who was found strangled in the bed of his truck in December 2001.
Prosecutors allege Torre used a move called the "lion killer" to choke Richards to death so he could be with the man's wife, Angelina Richards, and live off her husband's $1 million life insurance payout.

Angelina Richards has not been charged with any crimes.

Torre, testifying for a second day on Wednesday, repeatedly denied killing Richards.
He told jurors he suffered a hand injury during a fight a week before Bryan's death that made him physically unable to apply the chokehold that killed the man.

He said Angelina Richards confessed her husband's murder to him about five days after Bryan Richards died. She refused to tell him who she hired, he testified.

She did, however, give Torre her husband's gun, he said, with orders that he come forward and claim responsibility for the killing if she were ever arrested.

He was supposed to tell police Bryan Richards confronted him with the gun over the affair, and that he fought back in self-defense, he testified.

"That was her idea, not mine," he testified.

After Torre's jaw-dropping allegation against his former lover, Deputy District Attorney Kent Williams spent more than an hour trying to discredit him. Prior to Wednesday, the key prosecution witness in the trial was one of Torre's former martial arts students, Gerald Strebendt, who testified Torre told him he killed Richards in self-defense.

Torre on Wednesday admitted to telling Strebendt that story, but said it was a lie designed to protect Angelina.

Seeking details, Williams asked Torre if he told Strebendt he wore gloves during the confrontation with Richards.

Torre then either inadvertently confessed to the killing or made an unfortunate slip of the tongue.

"I didn't wear gloves," Torre answered.

Torre then quickly revised his answer to say he meant he didn't tell Strebendt he wore gloves.
Williams moved on, asking Torre how he could maintain a torrid love affair with a woman he believed orchestrated the "diabolical murder" of her own husband.

Torre answered that he was "freaked out" after Angelina Richards' confession. He said he distanced himself from her for several months.

Williams then confronted Torre with love letters and photos that showed Torre and the woman growing closer after the killing.

Williams also attempted to shred Torre's credibility, portraying him as a frequent liar who built his life by perpetrating frauds.

During the prosecutor's cross-examination, Torre admitted he deceived his wife of 10 years into believing he was a Navy SEAL, when in fact he flopped out of boot camp. He lied to the martial arts community about his background in Brazilian jujitsu, and he lied to police about his knowledge of Richards' murder.

"Is it fair to say that your life has, as one of its marked characteristics, the manipulation and deception of people?" Williams asked.

"Yes," Torre replied.

Torre, however, insisted he was telling the truth now that his life and freedom are at stake.
Williams, incredulous at the notion, came back with a flurry, listing Torre's many motives for murder and demanding honesty.

"Why don't you just tell the truth?" Williams challenged Torre. "Why don't you just come clean and admit to it instead of being a coward and lying?"

"I'm not lying," Torre answered.

Both sides rested their cases after Torre's testimony Wednesday. Closing arguments are set for Monday morning, and jurors could begin deliberating by Monday afternoon.

Angelina Richards' lawyers did not return calls Wednesday seeking comment on Torre's accusations.

Man faces murder charge in slaying of lover's husband

By Rod Leveque, Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - A former cage fighter charged with murder took the witness stand in his defense Tuesday and flatly denied strangling his lover's husband.

Rafiel M. Torre admitted to having a passionate affair with Bryan Richards' wife, but he insisted he did not choke the man to death nor solicit anyone to do so, as other witnesses have testified.

Torre and his lawyer wasted no time in getting to the question everyone wanted to hear Tuesday afternoon in West Valley Superior Court.

"Did you kill Bryan Richards?" was the first question lawyer Anthony Robusto asked Torre.

"No, I did not," Torre quickly replied.

Torre, 40, is famous in the martial arts community for his bare-knuckled fights inside caged rings, and his work as a journalist and commentator on televised pay-per-view matches, such as the Kings of the Cage series.

He is accused of the Dec. 21, 2001, murder of Richards, who was found dead in the bed of his pickup in the parking lot of a Rancho Cucamonga supermarket.
Prosecutors allege Torre used an inescapable chokehold known as the "lion killer" to strangle the 32-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man so Torre could be with Richards' wife and live off the man's $1 million life insurance policy.

Earlier in the trial, Torre's former student, professional fighter Gerald Strebendt, testified that Torre offered him $10,000 to kill Richards a few months before Richards' death. Strebendt said he refused.

Later, Strebendt testified that Torre confessed to him he had killed Richards himself but claimed it was in self-defense.

Torre, wearing a gray suit and a dark tie, took the stand Tuesday and rebutted those allegations.

Answering his lawyer's questions in a soft voice, he said he never offered to pay Strebendt to kill Richards, never told his former student he wanted Richards dead and never killed anyone.

Robusto gave Torre a few opportunities to deny any role in the murder, but most of the questioning Tuesday surrounded Torre's background as a martial artist and how he met Richards' wife.

Throughout his testimony, Torre readily admitted to having an affair with the woman, even saying he fell in love with her.

He testified he first met her at a nightclub called Club Rubber in Santa Ana around April 2001.

He began seeing her more seriously by August, and by November and December he was having sex with her as many as five times a week, he testified.
"She told me she loved me, and I was falling for her," he testified.

Torre said Richards was unaware of the affair, and he and Richards considered each other pals.

Richards had loaned him a truck, and Torre scored Richards free tickets to cage fights, he said.

"He was a fight fan," Torre said.

Torre testified he was active in the world of cage fighting until a few months after Richards' death, when rumors of his involvement grew so loud that he was ostracized from the fighting community.

"It was the kiss of death," he testified.

Torre was on the witness stand for about an hour Tuesday afternoon before Judge Barry Plotkin recessed the trial for the day. Torre is expected to continue testifying today, when Deputy District Attorney Kent Williams will have a chance to question him.

Man recalls emotion of finding brother's dead body
By Rod Leveque, Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - A man broke down in tears Monday as he described for jurors finding his brother's dead body in the back of a pickup. Keith Richards said he and another brother went searching for Bryan Richards on Dec. 22, 2001, after Bryan failed to come home to his wife and children.

They found him, not safe and sound as they had hoped, but in the bed of his pickup, buried beneath trash bags and wheeled dollies in the parking lot of a Rancho Cucamonga supermarket.

"It looked like someone mangled him," Keith Richards testified.
Keith Richards was the first witness to testify in the murder trial of Rafiel Torre in West Valley Superior Court. Prosecutors say Torre, a trained martial artist, strangled Bryan Richards, 32, so he could be with the man's wife and live off his life insurance payout.

Torre, 40, who is famous in the martial arts community, has pleaded not guilty.

Keith Richards testified Monday that his family became worried when Bryan uncharacteristically failed to come home in the days before Christmas.

Keith Richards said he was one of several family members who gathered at Bryan's Alta Loma home hoping to find him. Within a few hours of being there, however, he began to sense odd behavior that troubled him, he said.

For example, Bryan's life insurance papers were out on the kitchen table, less than 18 hours after he disappeared, Keith Richards testified.

And when Torre stopped by the house that evening, he talked about Bryan as though he knew Bryan wasn't coming back, Keith Richards said.

"It was kind of worrying me because it seemed they were talking about him in the past tense," Keith Richards testified.
Keith Richards said he checked Bryan's cell phone records, which showed the last call Bryan made was to Torre at about 7:20 p.m. on the night of his disappearance.

Keith testified that he and his brother began searching for Bryan at nearby stores after Bryan's wife suggested it.

They finally found his body in the parking lot of the Albertsons supermarket at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Vineyard Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga.

They summoned nearby paramedics and called 911, but Bryan was already dead, he said.

Testimony in the trial is scheduled to resume today.
